Why I’m building Ikaria
When I was a kid, I read a science-fiction novel by Iain M. Banks called Look to Windward. The people in it don’t live on ordinary planets. They live in worlds built on purpose — self-sustaining communities, each one run by an intelligence that knows every person inside it and keeps the whole place alive, so the people there are free to actually live. I closed the book thinking: I want to live there.
That stuck. For years I believed there had to be a better way to live — not grinding alone toward a longer life, but living somewhere the community itself was working for my longevity. Where eating well, moving, building, growing food, and looking after each other was just how the place ran. Where living sustainably and giving back to the land wasn’t a sacrifice — it was the same thing as living better.
For a long time that was a dream. It existed in fiction, in a few Blue Zones, and nowhere I could actually move to.
It’s not a dream anymore. Here’s what changed.
What changed
Everything you need to live longer and better already exists — the science, the food, the wearables, the protocols, the people, the medical technology. The parts were never the problem. The problem is that nothing talks to anything else. You end up being the integrator of your own life, stitching together a dozen products that don’t know each other exist, spending thousands a month, and it doesn’t work. Living well isn’t a product problem. It’s an integration problem.
That’s what AI finally solves. Not a chatbot — a brain that sits underneath the whole community and connects everything no person could ever hold at once, then acts on it. For every resident, in real time, all the time. Here’s how I think that changes daily life.
How I think we’re going to live
It reads you before you ask
You don’t log anything. You don’t open an app and answer questions. The brain is already reading your signals — your sleep, your recovery, your glucose, your last bloodwork, your stress, how much you’ve moved, how much sun you got, who you’ve actually spent time with. It holds all of it continuously, and it notices the patterns a person would miss: that your sleep has been slipping for nine days, that your glucose creeps every afternoon, that you haven’t seen a friend face-to-face all week. It knows where you are before you do.
Your food is the medicine, and it’s grown on-site
Because it knows, it acts. The meals in front of you are built around exactly what your body needs that day — more protein after a bad night, less sugar when your glucose has been climbing, the specific things your last panel said you were low on. And it doesn’t come from a delivery app or a supermarket shelf. It comes from the greenhouse built into the community — greens, vegetables, and eggs picked that morning, a couple hundred meters from your door. The brain saw the signal, the greenhouse had the ingredients, and the plate that lands in front of you is the one that puts you back on track. Food stops being a daily puzzle you have to solve. It quietly becomes the most personalized medicine you take, three times a day, without thinking about it.
The longevity center is down the street, not a flight away
Once a month you walk — not fly, not wait six months for a referral — to the community’s longevity center. An expert is there, and so is the technology that today exists in only a handful of clinics on earth. A robot scans you on site: full-body imaging, your real biological age, what’s changed since last time, what’s drifting the wrong way. The kind of workup that used to mean flying to a specific clinic, waiting months, and paying tens of thousands of dollars — the kind of thing that, at the extreme, took thirty doctors and millions a year to pull off — happens in your own neighborhood, as a normal part of living there.
And it doesn’t stop at measurement. If something needs a treatment, you get it right there, on site. Then the results flow straight back into the brain, so tomorrow’s breakfast, next week’s training, and next month’s plan all adjust to what the scan found. The loop closes. Nothing gets measured and forgotten.
The place takes care of itself, and gives back
Underneath all of it, the same brain runs the community itself — the greenhouse, the energy, the water, the food waste, the soil. Not as a sustainability report nobody reads, but as the actual operating system of how the place works. The food you eat was grown here. The power is clean. The waste goes back into the ground that grows next season’s food. Living here gives back to the land by default, because the system is built that way — you don’t have to be a better person to live sustainably, you just have to live here.
Your family is inside the same system
It isn’t only about you. Your AI talks to your family’s, your kids’, your neighbors’. Your daughter’s class this week is studying the solar grid that powers the home she lives in — her education is about the place, not separate from it. The brain routes your morning walk past the garden where a neighbor you’d been meaning to see is already out. The community is engineered to keep you connected to people, because the loneliest version of a long life isn’t the one we’re building.
What it adds up to
None of these are apps you check. It’s one intelligence making thousands of small connections a day that add up to a longer, better life — for you, and for everyone around you. That’s Ikaria. Five pillars — community, health, food, education, sustainability — one brain holding them together. A place engineered so that living well is the default, not a full-time job.
The bigger picture
If humanity is ever going to live beyond Earth — the Moon, Mars, further — the hard part was never the rocket. It’s building a community at the other end that survives on its own: grows its own food, makes its own energy and medicine, and runs itself well enough that normal people can just live there. That’s not a spaceship problem. It’s a community problem. A self-sustaining, smart community that runs on its own, to the advantage of everyone in it.
Which means the thing we have to build to leave Earth is the same thing we have to build to live well on Earth. The first colony isn’t on Mars. It’s the first neighborhood that closes the loop. We’re building the prototype. Communities are the wedge, not the ceiling.
